Laser Cutting Weeks 4-5

Brief
The brief of our laser cutting project is to design a market stall, the size of two car parks, which is approximately 5 by 5 metres. We must be creative and have some form of personal interest in the product we are selling or the activity taking place, in our stall. The overall theme for the next two weeks is sustenance, so the design and product of our stall must relate back to this idea. Sustenance involves everything in which the human body needs, in order for us to feel sustained. This can be anything from the basic necessities of food, water, shelter and cleanliness to the more complex ideas of social interaction and personal fitness. The final model of our stall must be able to be dismantled, just as all market stalls can be.

Sustenance idea
Why is it that mankind always has the need to smell attractive to the opposite sex? This arguement shows how a large part of sustenance today, is smelling good. For this exact reason mens cologne is going to be the selected product for my market stall. The attractive powers of pheromones and the idea of "smelling amazing", is sustenance.

Thumbnail Sketches - the first step
These sketches are just what I drew to help me do some research as to why my product is so appealling to society. Cologne comes in many different brands with various designs and shapes. Advertising is also a very important aspect of mens cologne as it draws people into buying it. The smell of the cologne itself is just one reason, out of many, used to boost attention.

Design Experimentation
In the beggining we were told to try and incorporate the use of laser cutting into the structure of our designs, not just for simply decorating. My inspiration for a design that was able to be dismantled came from modular interlinking, shown opposite. So my starting point was to experiment with interlinking pieces of card into a square latice. However as I did this the card started naturally curving on accident, which was actually very visually attractive.

The above concept for my market stall is made of multiple card segments, like the one shown in the photo on the right. I noticed that all the segments could be joined together to form one large twisting design that seems to be warping. For my final model I will laser cut all the pieces of the design and put them together in segments. These segments will be joined with joints that make it able to be dismantled. Card will still be used in my final model as I believe finding another material, with the same bending capabilities, is too time consuming.
